The Payson swim team splashes back into action tomorrow at Taylor Pool against Prescott Valley. Competition begins at 8 a.m. and will continue until about 12:30 p.m. Spectators are welcome free of charge, but those hoping for a premium view of the event should arrive early.
In a dual meet July 8 against Cottonwood, an overflow crowd packed Taylor Pool. Taylor lifeguards and Payson team coaches say they expect another large crowd this Saturday.
In recreation swim meets, the youngsters compete in age/sex divisions in several different strokes. They include butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle. Individual medley races are also contested.
Saturday's competition will feature about 100 local swimmers but the Payson team will be without the services of eight of its most talented athletes. Brooke Bennett, Shelby Bennett, Jordan Boll, Jaycee Boll, Tanner Hatch, Reed Hatch, Amy Buckner and Megan Disbrow have opted to travel to Kingman that day to participate in the Dolphin Invitational Meet. There, the eight will battle 12 teams from Arizona and one from California.
Also on the agenda for the Payson team is the team's annual benefit lap-a-thon which will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 20 at Taylor. The proceeds from the benefit are used annually to purchase new team equipment.
According to Taylor Pool manager Jim Quinlan, team coaches would like to use proceeds from the upcoming lap-a-thon to buy new lane lines for the pool.
The swim season wraps up Aug. 7 with an awards party. The event will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the large ramada in Rumsey Park. Following a potluck "pig out," the scene will shift to Taylor Pool for a swim party.
