A pair of the Rim country's most promising young golfers will join forces for the JPGAA pick-a-partner golf tournament, July 20 and 21 on the Sun City Pebblebrook Golf Course.
Brandon Kelley and Billy Bob Hoyt, both 14-year-old school chums, enter the 36-hole tournament as the 1998 champions and fourth-place finishers of last year.
Kelley tuned up for the prestigious fray by finishing second at a JPGAA Southwest sectional tournament played last weekend at Scottsdale Country Club. Over the course of 18 holes, Kelley turned in a 73 by eliminating his double bogies, his father Kevin said.
Hoyt has also been heating up the youth circuit, finishing fifth at the Mesa City tournament held July 5 and 6 at Painted Mountain Golf Club.
On the first day of play, Hoyt turned in a 71 to jump into third place. The second round, however, proved much tougher when the youngster fell to 77 and dropped two slots on the final standing's board.
According to Hoyt's father and coach, Bob, the finish was good among the 60 competitors, but said Billy Bob wished he had finished stronger the last day.
Also on Hoyt's agenda was the Boy's State Invitational for 14-15-year-olds held last week at Leisure World Golf Resort.
By carding a 77 the first day and 78 the second, Hoyt finished in a tie for ninth place.
"Not a great finish but overall not bad against many of the best 15-year-olds in the state," said his father.
Both youngsters will be freshmen at Payson High School next year and say they are looking forward to the challenges of playing on the prep level.
