Eleanor "Ellie" K. Meister, 82, of Pine, died July 16, 2000, at her home in Pine. She was born May 27, 1918, in Chicago, Ill. to Fred and Mamie Koeneke.
Mrs. Meister graduated from Carl Schurz High School in Chicago and from a business college. She received a master of music degree from Mendelssohn Conservatory in Chicago. For her performance, she played the Grieg Piano Concerto with the Conservatory Orchestra.
She received BA and MA degrees in English at Eastern New Mexico University. Her 1975 master's degree thesis was "Willa Cather's Creation of Father Latour."
She was the soprano soloist with the Northern Arizona Symphony Orchestra for its production of Handel's Messiah. She also served as church pianist and as a member of the choir.
Mrs. Meister was active in community affairs. She was president of P.E.O. chapters in Flagstaff and Portales, N.M. and president of the United Methodist Women's Group in Portales. She also worked for 18 years as a library volunteer in Pine.
Northern Arizona created the Charles and Ellie Meister Awards to go to outstanding contributors to the NAU honors program.
Survivors include her husband, Charles, of Pine; one son and one daughter-in-law, Charles J. and Sherri Meister of Flagstaff, Ariz.; and four grandchildren, Glenn and Greg Emanuel, and Jessica and Alyse Meister.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 22 at Payson United Methodist Church in Payson.
