The Rim country golfing duo of Brandon Kelly and Billy Bob Hoyt played their way to a second-place finish in the Junior Golf Association of Arizona pick-a-partner tournament. The event was contested July 20 and 21 at Sun City's Pebblebrook golf course.
In the best-ball formatted competition, the two finished with a 73 the first day and a five under par 67 on the second to finish two strokes down on the leaderboard.
Billy Bob also shined at a JGAA Southwest sectional tournament played last week at Rio Verde Golf Course. On the front nine, Billy shot a two over 38 and on the back nine and even par 36 to finish second with a 74.
The youngster was also one of eight young golfers in the state to qualify for the Ping junior match play tournament Aug. 7 and 8 at Wildfire Golf Club
The tournament, a single-elimination event with morning and afternoon matches the first day and a championship go-around the second day, will be played in the desert heat.
"That will make it a battle of stamina," Hoyt said.
The teenager qualified for the tournament by finishing among the top eight at the 2000 Antigua/Milt Coggins Stroke Play championship held in June.
On Kelley's agenda is a clash today in a JGAA Scottsdale sectional to be played at Foxfire course in Fountain Hills.
Next week, he travels with his family to Pittsburgh for a vacation. There, "he'll play all the courses," his mother Kim said.
