A veteran coach with loads of experience on both the junior high and high school levels is set to take over the Rim Country Middle School Lady Maverick eighth-grade softball team this season.
RCMS sixth-grade teacher Cheri Brennen assumes the eighth-grade reins from former coach Gary Ritter, who moves to the seventh-grade program.
Brennen is a familiar face in local softball circles, having served the past several seasons as a seventh-grade coach at RCMS and on the freshman and Jaycee level at Payson High School. She also is a longtime softball player in local recreation leagues.
The lone assistant on Brennen staff is Nina Ray.
In taking over the Lady Maverick eighth-graders, one of the first duties Brennen tackled was to schedule the opening of practices and tryouts for 8 a.m. Aug. 7 on the Payson High School softball field.
From Aug. 7 to Aug. 11, weekday practices will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Beginning Aug. 13 until the end of the season, weekday practice sessions will be 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Ritter has scheduled seventh-grade practice and tryouts to begin at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 9 also at Payson High School.
Both Brennen and Ritter are asking potential players to be sure to have the physicals and parent consent forms on file in the office of Rim Country Middle School Athletic Director Bill Bowling prior to the start of practices.
Once that is done, athletes will be issued a "blue card," which will allow them to practice with the team.
Potential players should take to practice: water bottle, glove, appropriate shoes, hat and sunscreen.
Those who have personal bats are welcome to bring them, Been said.
