Hatch Swimming In Gold At Asu

Rim country teen Reed Hatch of the Payson Pikes traveling team out-swam a star-studded field of athletes at the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association Summer Classic Swim meet held last weekend on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe.

Hatch's efforts in the 15-18-year-old boys 50-yard freestyle were good enough to earn him one of only three gold medals ever won by a Payson swimmer at the Classic.

The others who have won golds were Emme Gibson and Austin White in the early '90s, long-time Payson swim coach Dani Hatch said.

In winning the gold, Reed Hatch who turned in a 24.79 clocking nipped the runner-up Kingman swimmer (24.84) by less than a stroke.

Hatch also swam his way to a fourth-place ribbon in the 100-yard freestyle and a seventh-place ribbon in the 50-yard butterfly.

The youngster was one of a foursome of squad members to travel the ARPA Classic.

The others were Megan Disbrow, Sami Novak and Amy Buckner.

Disbrow, competing in the 15-18-years girls' division, emerged the only athlete among the trio to win a ribbon hers in the 100-yard individual medley in which she finished seventh.

Medals were awarded to first- through third-place swimmers and ribbons to fourth- through seventh-place finishers.

Disbrow was also ninth in both the 50-yard breaststroke and freestyle events.

Both Buckner and Novak competed in the 11-12-year-old girls competition. Buckner was 13th in both the freestyle and individual medley and 20th in the backstroke.

Novak was 20th in the freestyle and 60th in the backstroke.

Because the competition is so tough in the meet, the showings turned in by the Payson swimmers were commendable, coach Hatch said.

While the four Pikes were in Tempe battling, the remaining members of the local Parks and Recreation swim team were in action at Taylor Pool against the Kingman Dolphins.

Because it was a recreational meet, no team scores were kept. However, the Payson effort was fueled by Lauren Galhotra (6-and-under girls) and Jaycee Boll (7-8-year girls).

Both youngsters swam their way to first-place finishes in all four events butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.

Next up for the swim team is an Aug. 4 visit to Cottonwood, where the Pikes are entered in the Verde Valley Invitational.

Because about 10 top-notch swim teams from around Arizona are slated to participate, the competition will be fierce for the young band of Payson swimmers, coach Hatch said.

Currently, 36 members of the Pikes traveling team are slated to attend the meet.

Following the team's return from Cottonwood, the 2000 campaign will wrap up with the traditional banquet and swim party Aug. 7 at Rumsey Park and Taylor Pool

The annual "Pikes' Pig-Out" feast and awards ceremony will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the large ramada at Rumsey. All team members and their parents are invited to attend.

At the banquet, team pictures taken earlier this summer will be distributed to those who purchased them, coach Hatch said.

Following the pig-out, the swimmers will head to Taylor Pool for a swim party from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Team members who cannot attend the banquet may pick up their pictures anytime after Aug. 8 at the Parks and Recreation offices at Green Valley Park.
