Longhorns' Fall Sports Program Begins Next Week


With the new school year rapidly approaching, Payson High School Athletic Director Dave Bradley has finalized the schedules for the opening week of preseason practices Aug. 7 to 11. But before any athlete can participate, Bradley warns, they must have on file in his office a current physical exam and parent consent forms.

Once all the necessary paperwork is taken care of, Bradley will issue the athletes a "blue card" which signals the coaches the athletes are eligible to participate.

Football Under first year head coach Mike Wheelis, pre-season practices will be held from 8 a.m. to noon and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Freshman are to report at 8 a.m. Aug. 7 and will be told what their schedule will be the remainder of the week.

Girls Soccer During the preseason week, practices will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on the Rumsey Park multi-purpose field.

Boys Soccer First-year head coach Byron Quinlan has scheduled opening week sessions for 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Rumsey Park.

Volleyball Practices will be held from 8 a.m. until noon in Wilson Dome. Coaches Sue Weems and Krystal Garvin have designated Aug. 9 as the day for team tryouts.

Cross Country Practices will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Rumsey I.

Beginning Aug.14, all fall sports will hold the traditional after-school practices beginning about 3:30 p.m. and lasting about two hours.
