Phs Soccer Trio Scores All-Star Goal

A trio of former Longhorn soccer standouts will compete in the Arizona Coaches Association's North vs. South All-Star game Saturday at Casa Grande High School.

Kick off is at 6:30 p.m.

Slated to represent Payson are Jeremy Conner, David Shaw and Justin Cline. The three graduated last month with the Class of 2000 and were postseason honor winners in soccer.

Conner, a four-year letter winner for former PHS coach Dave Greiner, played stopper most of his senior campaign. He's expected to man the same position in the all-star game.

At the conclusion of the past season, Conner received an athletic scholarship offer from Tri-State University in Indiana.

According to his father, Victor, Jeremy turned down the scholarship to attend the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he hopes to major in architecture.

Cline, a sweeper for the Longhorns last season, was the all-important last man on defense before the goalkeeper.

His season-long efforts on the field drew plaudits from Greiner who said, "no one could quite do it like he could."

Payson's third all-star, Shaw, held down a forward position where he used his sprinter's speed to help the Longhorns advance to the state semifinals.

The trio of local players who were chosen to participate, Greiner said, well deserve the honor.
