John and Linda Holmes of Tonto Basin handed the federal court in Phoenix a cashier's check for $17,450.50 last Thursday to pay restitution for money they pleaded guilty to stealing from the U.S. Forest Service at Roosevelt Lake.
The Holmes became the subjects of a six-month investigation into missing money from deposit boxes at Roosevelt Lake. As an employee of the U.S. Forest Service, Linda Holmes had access to those boxes, and in March, signed a plea agreement, pleading guilty to felony theft. Her husband, a former Gila County Sheriff's deputy, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft.
In the plea agreement, Linda Holmes pleaded guilty to pocketing more than $17,000 from Tonto National Forest deposit boxes.
In addition to restitution, John Holmes was sentenced to three years of supervised probation; Linda Holmes was sentenced to 120 days of home confinement, followed by three years of supervised probation.
