The pool of instructors certified to teach swimming at Taylor Pool deepened last week when seven lifeguards received their Water Safety Instructor certification.
Those who completed the 40-hour Red Cross WSI instructor class include Sara Sieverson, Shaun Hounshell, David Shaw, Amanda Mays, Gloria Olsson, Reed Hatch and Mary Mendoza. The group join Tanner Hatch and Cassie Fulp as accredited swim teachers.
In addition to the new instructors, Taylor Pool Manager Jim Quinlan recently completed the three-year process for becoming a Red Cross certified instructor of swim teachers.
The last phase of Quinlan's training involved student-teaching, a class in which he was observed and evaluated by Red Cross officials. According to Quinlan, the new corps of Taylor Pool swim teachers will immediately begin instructing lessons that began June 5 and will be held in two-week sessions throughout the summer.
Class sizes are limited and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
The next swim lesson session to begin Monday is full, said Parks and Recreation senior clerk Rowena Marrs. However, the next two sessions beginning July 10 and 24 do have openings, Marrs said. Registration for those classes ends on the Friday before the sessions begin.
Sign-up is $15 per person and can be completed at the Parks and Rec offices located in Green Valley Park.
