2 Killed, 1 Injured When Cycles Collide

The drivers of two separate motorcycles were killed and one passenger injured Friday morning in a head-on collision north of Strawberry.

About 10 a.m. Friday, just two miles north of Strawberry near milepost 273 on a twisty section of Highway 87, 63-year-old Lawrence Holt of Vernon, Ariz. apparently lost control of his late model Suzuki, said Department of Public Safety Sgt. John Whetton.

"(Holt) was southbound and in a right-hand turn when excessive speed forced him left of center," Whetton said.

Traveling north at the same time, 43-year-old John Alkema took evasive action with his 2000 Harley Davidson by sliding toward the right shoulder, Whetton said. In spite of his actions, Alkema could not avoid the collision and he and Holt drove into each other.

Both men were pronounced dead on the scene by Pine-Strawberry paramedics, Capt. Harris Scott of the Pine-Strawberry Fire Department said.

Alkema's passenger, 34-year-old Tami Wheeler, was airlifted to Scottsdale Healthcare Hospital in Scottsdale, complaining of pelvic and back pain. As of Tuesday morning she was listed in fair condition.

Holt was wearing a helmet, Alkema and Wheeler were not.
