The benefit prime rib dinner June 21 at the Small Cafe was a smashing success, according to local Fellowship of Christian Athletes sponsor Denny Morse.

About 120 people joined in on the dinner which earned about $2,000 to be used for scholarships to send 16 local athletes to FCA camps in football, wrestling and basketball. The camps will be July 2 to 6 on the campus of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

Following the dinner, Morse praised several who helped sponsor the highly successful benefit.

About Small Cafe owners Todd and Sharon Zelinski, he said, "Both contributed their wonderful culinary skills in providing the prime rib meal ... the tables were beautifully prepared with candlelight and fresh flowers."

The flowers were donated by Payson Florist.

Other sponsors Morse thanked included Creative Hands, Shamrock Foods, Sav-More Foods and Safeway.

Goin' camping

Registration is being accepted for participation in a pair of upcoming youth football camps.

The first camp, July 24 to 26, is open to youngsters ages 8 to those who will be members of the incoming eighth-grade class.

Sessions will be from 8 a.m. until noon on the Rim Country Middle School field.

The second camp, for athletes who will be in high school next fall, will be from 8 a.m. to noon July 31 to Aug. 4.

According to PHS head coach Mike Wheelis, the purpose of the camps is to acquaint the young players with the basic fundamentals of football. He stresses the camps are not for physical conditioning and campers should report in good condition.

Both offensive and defensive skills are stressed. Also, coaches will stress improving the agility of the athletes.

Registration for the youth camp is $30 per athletes. For the high school session, it is $50.
