It's an unusual twist of athletics when a town parks and recreation department sponsors a sports league in a community 70 miles away.
But that's exactly what's occurring between the Town of Fountain Hills Parks and Recreation Department and the community of Payson.
Early this month, play began in a Fountain Hills-sponsored senior slow-pitch softball league that features games at 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. each Wednesday at Rumsey Park in Payson.
Contests are also played in Fountain Hills.
Fountain Hills Recreation Director Milo Bonnin said his department decided to sponsor senior games in Payson because of the cooler Rim country weather.
League games that are played in Fountain Hills must start at 7:30 a.m. to avoid the searing desert heat.
Six teams participate in the senior league, one of which is from the Rim country.
The Payson Grays, managed by Ron Maksymowski, currently sports a 4-2 record. The other five teams all Valley teams are Arizona Cougars, Buzzards, Kool Kats, Arizona Outlaws and Bob's Rockers.
Most games involving Payson are double headers. The next local outing for the locals will be July 12 against Bob's Rockers.
League play continues until Aug. 2.
