Four Rim country athletes skied their way to gold medals at the Arizona Special Olympics Alpine Winter Games held Feb. 18 at Sunrise Park Resort.
Winners included John Sexton in the senior intermediate division and Ken Titus, Mike Gillies and Tim Self among the junior intermediates. The athletes raced in a slalom/giant slalom format.
The athletes are coached locally by Payson High School teacher Becky Derwort.
The Special Olympics' winter event is historically held at Snowbowl ski area in Flagstaff, but was moved this year to Sunrise due to the lack of snowpack in the Flagstaff area.
Sunrise donated lift tickets and rental equipment for the event. "We are glad to help out the Special Olympics of Arizona," said Chris Shellabarger, Sunrise Park general manager. "It's a great event and we applaud the staff of Special Olympics for a job well done."
