With bases loaded, Vern Stearns' single to left in the bottom of the eighth scored Dan Rebai from third to cap an 8-7 Payson/Prescott Prospectors Senior League softball victory over the Fountain Hills Kool Kats.
Playing in Apache Junction, the Prospectors went on to whip Fountain Hills 19-9 in the second game to sweep the senior twin bill.
While the second game proved to be a breather, the opening game win was a real nail-chewing contest, Prospector player-coach Ron Maksymowski said.
The drama of the eighth inning began to unfold after regulation play ended with the score dead knotted 7-7.
After holding Fountain Hills scoreless in the top of the extra inning, the Prospectors put the winning run on base when Rebai opened the bottom of the frame with a single.
A single by Dick Johnson sent Rebai churning into second. Corb Corbin then drew an intentional walk which jam-packed the bases and set the state for Stearns' heroics.
In the second game win, Maksymowski said, his team pounded out 26 hits. Stearns finished as the offensive leader with seven hits in eight trips to the plate.
Don Besolk was six for six and Earl Davis pounded out five hits. Maksymowski cited the defensive efforts of Neil McVicar, Ken Cheeseman and Earl Davis as huge reasons for the two wins. Johnson was credited with the pitching wins in both games.
