What many expected to be the noisiest topic of debate at last night's town council meeting -- the Parks and Recreation Department's request for additional bleacher seat funding for the Payson Event Center -- became the quietest when the issue was quickly tabled.
The request sought to authorize the expenditure of $30,000 from the Council Contingency Fund, matched by a $30,000 contribution from the Payson Economic Development Corporation for a total allocation of 60,000 to bleacher seat distributor Norcon Industries Inc.
As soon as the new business issue came up, Vice Mayor Ken Murphy suggested tabling the discussion because he'd heard of a better, cheaper plan worth further investigation.
This news irritated Mayor Vern Stiffler.
"I'm disappointed I was not given this information. Isn't that supposed to come to me?" the mayor asked before the request was tabled.
In other business, the council unanimously gave Town Manager Rich Underkofler authority to negotiate with Crown Castle International, which wants to lease town land for a communication tower. The company plans to provide digital wireless telephone service to the Payson area.
