Little League registrations, drafts and tryouts are at an end, which leads the way to the onset of the season just around the corner.
April 15, action will get under way in earnest at the opening day ceremonies to be held at Rumsey park.
Festivities will include introductions of players, team pictures, games, raffles and possibly a silent auction. Food and drinks will also be available.
Little League President Stephanie Dvorak says the public is invited to the festivities.
Specifics of the event have not yet been finalized by the league governing board but Dvorak says she "will provide more detailed information as we get closer."
In other league affairs, the 16-year-old traveling team was disbanded for lack of players and coaches.
The better news is that Brandon Moore has been appointed the new coach for the Senior League Pine team. Also, Dvorak says, it's likely a volunteer has been found to take over the position as the Major League Director.
MSA on a run
Mogollon Sporting Association member Mike Wheelis dropped by a list of the prizes and raffle and auction items for the MSA banquet to be held May 1 at the Mazatzal Casino.
The list is simply overwhelming.
Prizes for a special raffle include a Ruger .338 Winchester Magnum donated by U.S. West. Also, there are two .50-caliber muzzle loaders with scopes, donated by Hold Communications and Wadsworth Construction.
The winner of the early bird drawing can choose either a 14K diamond pendant and chain or a Browning A-bolt 7 mm rifle. At the ladies raffle, one lucky winner will take home a $1,200 Payson Jewelers gift certificate.
Included in the prize list of a "blitz" event are a spotting scope, 1/2 beef cut and wrapped as well as two javelina permits donated by Arizona Game and Fish. Along with the permits is a shoulder mount from Mogollon Taxidermy.
The highlights of the silent auction could be four Arizona Diamondback tickets with a parking pass to a May 16 game at Bank One Ballpark against the Colorado Rockies.
Other prizes include art, limited edition prints, camping equipment, automobile services and equipment, archery equipment and clothing. With 150 prize, auction and raffle items on the list, the MSA banquet could be bigger and better than ever.
More than 200 tickets, priced at $50 each, went on sale March 1. Call 472-9794 for more information.
Hoop it up
The 2000 AAU Arizona State Boys Basketball Championships will be accepting applications for team entries until March 16. The tournament is for youngsters in third to seventh grades or ages 9 to 13 years.
The tournament will be played at Mesquite High School in Gilbert. Last year, over 70 teams representing both clubs and schools entered the tournament. Teams can use the Gilbert tournament as a springboard to qualify for the ASU National championships.
