Paced by home runs from the bats of hot-hitting Jennifer Plumb, Brooke McRae and Trista Carlton, the Lady Longhorn jayvee team (2-0) crushed East region rival Round Valley 21-11.
Mercifully, the game was called off at the end of five innings on the 10-run rule. The blowout was originally to be played in Payson March 10, but because of wet, muddy fields, the contest was moved to the Round Valley campus in Eagar.
With the switch, the team's second encounter against Round Valley slated for April 8 will now be played in Payson rather than in Eagar, as it states on most sports schedules.
Game time is 3:30 p.m. at Rumsey Park. In the win over RV, coach Cheri Brennen praised the pitching of LeeAnn Owens, Carlton and Plumb who shared mound duties.
"(The pitching) was outstanding," Brennen said.
Missy Hill, Brandi Waugh and Owens paced the team at the plate, pounding out four hits each in five trips to the batter's box. Plumb and Carlton finished with three hits each.
Defensively, the coach cited the efforts of Falicia Klemstine and Waugh who, she said, have played great defense the entire year.
Alert and aggressive base-running from Waugh, Owens, Carlton and McRae also contributed to the triumph, Brennen said.
In addition to the win over Round Valley, the jayvees won a 25-3 decision over Alchesay Feb. 29 in Payson.
