Despite Depleted Squad, Tonto Apaches Bring Home The Medals

Because a youth basketball tournament was being contested Saturday, the Tonto Apache Track and Field team was not at full strength when it traveled to Phoenix Shadow Mountain High School for its second competition of the spring season.

"We were missing a lot of our team who were playing in the tournament," team coach Billy Joe Winchester said.

Bevy of medals

Even with a depleted squad of only 10 athletes, the track team returned to the reservation with a bevy of medals in hand.

Payson High School freshman Waylon Quotskuyva produced two gold medals winning both the shot-put and the discus events in the intermediate boys' age division.

In youth boys' competition, Anthony Johnson won the javelin throw.
