Longhorn Linksters Hope To Turn Cougars Into April Fools At Show Low Invitational

Playing the Show Low Invitational at Silver Creek Golf Course April 1 should be old hat for the Longhorn golf team.

Only one week ago, the Horns were at Silver Creek to participate in an East regional meet against many of the same teams who'll be participating tomorrow.

The one front-running team the Horns will have their sights set on is the host Cougars.

In last week's competition, Show Low edged Payson for the meet championship by three strokes (164-161). With a 180, Snowflake finished a distant third.

The remainder of the field trailed in the standings.

Payson coach Dave Bradley said the scores his team cards tomorrow should improve over the first meeting since that trip represented the team's first look at the Silver Creek course.

Also adversely affecting play was the cold blustery wind that played tricks with tee shots.

Leading the Horn contingent to Show Low will be Tyson McKee, who has been the team's most consistent player all season, Bradley said.

Freshman Dallas Rensch is a young player who has also shown flashes of brilliance on the course.

At the last Show Low competition, Rensch led the Horn effort with a 37. McKee finished with a 40.

Others who participated in the last meet and will again travel to Show Low are Keith Stevens (41), Jeff Higgins (46) and Tyler Perna (47).

In the jayvee shoot-out at Silver Creek, the Horns finished 179, one stroke off the pace set by winning Show Low (179). Pacing the young Horns were Tyler Shrum (41), John McDermott (45), David Curtiss (46), Stephanie Marrs (47) and Kyle Kent (54).

The Longhorns' next home appearance is set for April 5 at the Rim Club against Snowflake, Show Low and Blue Ridge. Tee time is noon.

Fans and spectators are welcome to walk the course with their favorite Longhorn players.
