Martinez's Triple Jump Misjudged, Still A Record

Sometime during the next two spring sports seasons, opponents might ask to rename Lady Longhorn track and field meets "The Rheanna Martinez Show."

The high-flyin' PHS junior usually emerges the starlet of any meet in which she participates. Only last Saturday at the 30-team Winslow Invitational, Martinez dominated the proceedings, winning four gold medals and setting a new school record.

And all that on the heels of another four golds she pocketed at a Payson-hosted three-way meet held April 20 on PHS field.

Battling windy conditions in Winslow, Martinez easily captured the long jump event with a school-record lead of 17 feet, 11 1/2 inches. She then used her soaring ability to capture first place in the triple jump with a mark of 36 feet, 9 inches. Turning on her usual speed, Martinez sprinted to first-place finishes in the 100- (12.89) and 200-meter (25.63) dashes.

About the only disheartening news the teenager received during the past few days was that her 39-foot 6-inch triple of two weeks ago was incorrectly measured. According to throws coach Pete Greer, it was discovered after the fact that the measurement was taken on the wrong side of the toe board.

After recalculating the jump, Martinez was credited with a leap of 39 feet. Even though it is six inches shorter than the original mark, the leap remains a Lady Longhorn record.

Martinez's efforts at the Winslow Invitational lifted the Lady Horns to the meet championship with 109 points. Trailing were Flagstaff (86), Snowflake (70), Window Rock (57) and Coconino (53), Blue Ridge (52), Page (38) and others. The easy victory in Winslow stamped the defending state champion Lady Longhorns as the overwhelming favorites to win the East regional title May 4 and 6 at Blue Ridge High School in Lakeside.

May 12 and 13, the Horns travel to Chandler High School where the team will try to nail down its second successive state title.
