Deadline Extended For 3-On-3 Basketball

Payson High School boys basketball coach Randy Wilcox, along with the town's parks and recreation department, will host a 3-on-3 basketball league this summer.

The league tips off today, May 22, and will continue until June 8. Games will be played from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesdays and Thursday in Wilson Dome. Boys entering grades 9 through 12 are eligible to participate.

According to Wilcox, the number of players on a team roster is unlimited, but a player can be named to only one roster.

Registration is $10 per person and can be completed at the parks and recreation department offices located in Green Valley Park.

In addition to the 3-on-3 tournament, Wilcox and the parks and rec department will host two boys summer camps.

The first, for youngsters entering grades 4, 5 and 6, will be held June 12 to June 16 in the old gymnasium at Payson High School. The other camp, for youngsters in grades 7, 8 and 9, will be held June 19 to 23.

Both camp sessions will be conducted from 1 to 3 p.m. daily in the old Payson High School gymnasium.

Registration, which ends May 31, may be completed at the parks and rec offices at Green Valley Park. Fee is $25 per players.

Cancer benefit

The upcoming Relay for Life benefit is being billed as "nonstop fun" featuring a "carnival atmosphere."

The big event begins at 6 p.m. June 2 and continues until 7 a.m. June 3 with the closing ceremonies. All events will be on the high school football field.

The team event, which includes walking and running the entire evening, is held annually to benefit the American Cancer Society.

GC games

Individuals and teams from around the Rim country are preparing for participation in the 8th annual Grand Canyon State 2000 games that will be held June 2 to 4 in Tucson and June 15 to 18 in metro Phoenix.

The event is America's premier amateur Olympic-style sports festival. 35 sports will be contested in the Phoenix competition and 14 in Tucson. the Executive Commissioners of this year's games are Phoenix Suns star Tom Gugliotta and Luis Gonzalez of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
