The Payson Grays senior slow-pitch softball team wrapped up play in the Fountain Hills league by sweeping a double-header, 14-8 and 14-7, from the Scottsdale Rockers, Grays player/coach Ron Maksymowski said.

The twin wins upped the Grays season-ending record to 8-8.

According to Maksymowski, the Payson seniors will now turn their attention to a newly-instituted summer senior league to be played at Rumsey II ball field. The league, he said, is co-sponsored by both the Fountain Hills and Payson parks and recreation departments.

Games at Rumsey Park will be played on Wednesdays beginning the first week in June.

In the pair of victories over Scottsdale, Maksymowski the winning hurler in both contests attributed the victories to "stellar defense and timely hitting."

Defensively, the team was paced by several double plays turned in by the infield combination of Neil McVicar, Earl Davis, Dick Johnson and Walt Knasick.

"They put the hurt on Scottsdale," Maksymowski said.

In the outfield, Ralph Bossert, Vern Stearns and Corb Corbin played error-free ball. The offense was paced by Johnson, Davis and Bossert who all finished with five base hits. Stearns and Corbin contributed four hits each.
