White Mountain League wrestling action is heating up the middle school/junior high sports scene.
Just last Saturday, Rim Country Middle School the local entry in the WML wrestled its way to a third-place finish during the Heber-Mogollon Invitational Tournament.
By compiling 202 points, the Mavericks only trailed tournament champion Snowflake (229) and runner-up Mogollon (210).
The Maverick effort in Heber was fueled by the accomplishments of its two tournament champions Nathan Lee (142) and Mike Waterman (180).
The event was Waterman's first sports competition since he hurt his knee late in the middle school football season.
RCMS returned to WML action Monday in the old Payson High School gymnasium against Mogollon. Meet results were not available at press time.
In dual meets contested earlier this campaign, RCMS thumped Winslow 79-12, but lost to St. Johns 58-24 and Snowflake 72-22.
At the Chance Amon Memorial Tournament contested Nov. 11 in Payson, the Mavericks grappled their way to bronze medal honors.
The tournament tagged "Battle of the Upstarts" pitted nonstarters from the WML schools against one another.
RCMS coach Gary Ritter said the annual tournament gives younger and less experienced wrestlers an opportunity to compete against others of similar ability and talent.
Six league schools participated.
The Mavericks produced a trio of weight division tournament champions including Greg Stark (133), P.J. Prest (142) and Nathan Mileham (154).
Don Engler (167), Lance Chabot (133), Josh Blalock (118) and David Cluff (930) wrestled to silver-medal laurels. Brandon Prochnow (68), Brad Meyocks (142) and Jake Godfrey (167) won third.
