Safeway Collects Books To Benefit High School Baseball

All the proceeds of this year's Safeway Used Book Sale will go to the Payson High School baseball team, according to Dave Lyons, local Safeway manager.

The annual event, which begins Wednesday, Oct. 18, offers donated used books for sale for $2 at a special display in the front of the store located at 401 E. Highway 260.

"Proceeds from the sale used to go to Easter Seals," Lyons explained, "but now Safeway is letting stores in smaller communities pick the local charity of its choice. One reason I picked the baseball team is that coach Teddy Pettet has helped us with the Easter Seal fund-raising in the past.

"Besides," Lyons added, "I played baseball at Scottsdale High School and Scottsdale Community College, and it seems like there was never enough money. Next year we'll pick another worthy cause."

While Safeway already has a large supply of used books on hand, donations are also welcome. The sale will last "three or four weeks, or as long as we still have books," Lyons said.
