With their state 11th-ranked varsity counterparts competing at the Thunderbird Invitational near Phoenix, the Lady Horn cross country jayvee team finally had the limelight to themselves.
The team responded to the opportunity which came Oct. 13 in Snowflake by winning the Lobo Invitational girls jayvee championship. Accumulating 37 points, the young Horns narrowly edged runner-up Alchesay (40).
Shalynn McGee fueled the PHS cause, winning the individual title in 22:34. Sophomore Ashli Herrera, in her first year of cross country competition, sped her way to a third-place finish in 24:22.
Also competing for the rookie Horns were Jennifer Shiflett (fifth; 24:31), Jennifer Boyd (28:47) and Stephanie Marrs (15th; 28:47).
Jayvee boys take third
In the boys' jayvee competition, the Horns had to settle for a third-place finish behind silver medalist Alchesay and champion Winslow. Payson compiled 63 points, Alchesay 43 and Winslow 30.
Competing for Payson were Martin Garcia (2nd; 18:44), Danny Malloy (13th; 20:06), James Rivas (15th; 21:06), Tanner Morgan (16th; 21:14), Troy Marrs (17th; 21:33), Josh Sprinkle (20th; 22:29), Dave Curtiss (21st; 22:40) and Michael Closs (26th; 24:41). The winning time in the 29-runner field (18:39) was turned in by a Winslow athlete.
