Labor Day Softball Draws Thousands

Nearly 1,000 players, fans, families and friends arrived in the Rim country over the holiday weekend for the 20th annual Payson Labor Day Softball Tournament which featured hard-hitting action at Rumsey Park and the Payson High School ballfields.

"The competition included men's, women's and co-ed divisions with two teams in each group being from right here in Payson," Recreation Director Teddy Pettet said.

The action started Saturday with the final games played Sunday.

In the women's division, Payson had two teams represented Turn Two and Bobcat Concrete.

First-place honors went to Prescott Oaks with the Payson's Turn-Two pulling in second-place honors in the four team competition.

The men's division which featured 13 teams was split into two groups with upper division honors going to Malouf & Company out of Prescott and second place captured by Casa Grande.

The men's lower division champs were the Glendale Firefighters which Pettet said "had some guys who could really hit the ball out of there."

Second-place honors went to Cholla Ready Mix.

In the consolation bracket competition the State Farm team from Payson garnered the no. 1 spot. The other Payson team in the competition Bobcat Concrete did not place.
