Harold Kautz


Harold Louis Kautz, 85, of Payson, died Sept. 10, 2000. He was born Sept. 22, 1914, in Muscatine, Iowa. In 1936, while attending the University of Iowa, he met and married Ruth Duncan. They were happily married until her death in 1998.

After graduating from the University of Iowa in 1937, he opened a law practice in Muscatine. Mr. Kautz served in the Navy during world War II as an instructor of electronic theory. After the war, he and his wife opened a law practice in Chandler, Ariz.

In 1947 Mr. Kautz was selected to be the city attorney of Chandler, Ariz., a position he held until appointed city magistrate in Phoenix in 1963.

In 1977, Mr. Kautz and Ruth retired to Payson. He was a life member of the Lions Club, member of the VFW, American Legion and the Elks Club. He helped establish the first PTA in Chandler; was an avid bridge player, rock collector and author. He also enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his daughters, Betty Cowart and Sharon Lillie of Phoenix; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20 at Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main Street, followed by a reception.

Contributions may be made to the Payson Lions Club.
