The Payson High School freshmen, JV and varsity volleyball teams swept Show Low Tuesday in Payson.
Payson's freshman fell to Show Low 10-4 early in the first game, but battled back for a 15-11 win. The Lady Horns demonstrated great digging and sets along with superior communication.
In the second game, Payson took an early 6-1 lead, but Show Low bounced back to tie it at 6. The lead continued to swing back and forth until the teams tied again at 14. Despite a number of net serves, Payson pulled ahead to win 16-14.
"Show Low presented quite a challenge as their players were very good at getting the ball back over the net," freshman volleyball coach Chris Schwind said. But "our bench came on real strong, especially while we were missing three of our starters."
JV takes the court
Payson JV took an early 9-0 lead in its first game with Show Low, and despite a mid-game comeback by the Cougars, Payson fought them off, winning the game 15-8. During the second game, however, Payson seemed to send an entirely different team out onto the court. The Lady Horns found themselves down 10-4 and were unable to score the rest of the game, allowing Show Low to win 15-4.
Payson regrouped and came out strong in the third and final game to win the match.
The varsity Lady Longhorns also won their match, continuing to dominate Show Low as they did the weekend before in the Payson Invitational Tournament.
Show Low was the only team that was able to win a game against Payson in the consolation round of the invitational, but Payson came back to dominate Show Low and win the double-elimination tournament.
