Tonto Apaches Grab Gold At Glendale

Battling 90-degree desert heat at Glendale College, Tonto Track and Field team members weren't able to post their usual glowing times and distances.

But the team preformed well enough to earn 30 top-10 medals, including three golds at the March 31 Phoenix Invitational.

"It was hot and that hurt the kids' marks," Tonto Apache coach Billy Joe Winchester said, "but overall, we did great."

Some of the best efforts turned in by Tonto Apache team members came from Miguel Lopez, Mirle Weisser and Michael Waterman.

Competing in the midget boys division, Lopez won the discus with a toss of about 60 feet, Winchester said.

Weisser copped the gold in the intermediate boys high jump by soaring over 4 feet 11 inches.

Waterman captured the shot-put with a heave just shy of 39 feet. Although Alex Winchester the coach's son finished sixth in the youth boys shot-put, he uncorked a throw of 30 1/2 feet that was a personal record.

The Tonto Apache team which has the distinction of being the reigning Grand Canyon Games Athletes of the Year has long been one of the most successful squads on the USA Track and Field.

Winchester has also been on the receiving end of state honors. He received an Outstanding Leadership Award March 28 from the Arizona Governor's Council on Health, Fitness and Sports.

The prestigious honor was bestowed at Phoenix America West Arena during halftime of the Phoenix Suns vs. Cleveland Cavaliers game.

The Tonto Apache track team returns to USA action April 14th in Phoenix.
