Players will be burning rubber at the Wilson dome next Saturday, April 21, when the Payson Hot Wheels take on the Banner Wheelchair Suns in a benefit basketball game. Proceeds from the 5th annual wheelchair grudge match will be used to buy books, equipment and other materials for Rim country children with special needs.
The Suns don't just play for benefits, though. A member of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association, the Banner Suns are in the midst of a perfect 28-0 season, and advance to the semi-finals against Southwest State of Minnesota. The team is sponsored by America West Airlines, Banner Health Arizona, the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Spinal Cord Injury Association.
Playing for the Payson Hot Wheels are representatives from the benefit sponsors.
Raffle items include a basketball, autographed by Phoenix Suns' player Jason Kidd; a hockey puck signed by the Coyote's Jeremy Roenick; and four tickets for an Arizona Diamondbacks game. Halftime entertainment is provided by the Rim Country Middle School band and the Rhythm Dancers. The Mount Cross Clowns also will be on hand for face painting, and Bubbles, the Suns clown, is scheduled to be there.
Free tickets are available at team sponsors. Admission at the door is $1, or free for children 12 and under. Game time is 7 p.m.
