Back-to-back East regions wins early this week have put the Lady Longhorns in position to earn a berth into the state tournament.
To advance to state, the Lady Horns must finish among the top four East region teams. With an 8-4 record, the Horns are clinging to third behind Snowflake and Show Low.
The regular season wraps up at 4 p.m. today (Friday) when the Lady Horns host Show Low.
Payson could have fallen out of playoff contention had it not whipped Pinnacle, 5-2, Monday and Blue Ridge, 8-0, the following day.
Against homestanding Pinnacle, freshman Brenna Zumbro picked up the hurling win, going the full seven innings on the hill.
Brandi Waugh and Zumbro led the Horn offense with two hits each in four trips to the plate.
Against Blue Ridge in Lakeside, Zumbro again hurled the victory, allowing two hits in seven innings.
She also struck out two and walked one. According to statistics, only two of the Horns' eight runs were earned.
Brooke McRae swatted a double to lead the Payson offense.
The East regional tournament is set to begin May 4 and 5. The state tournament will be played May 11 and 12.
