If tradition continues, it will rain today (Friday) for the running of the Monsoon 5K.

Held at Green Valley Park and sponsored by the Payson Parks and Recreation Department, the annual run is often held under cloudy, drizzly skies. Those conditions prompted the name Monsoon 5K Walk-Run.

The event begins at 5 p.m. with check-in and late registration. Those who pre-registered before Thursday paid a $10 entry fee and will receive T-shirts.

For those who register this afternoon at the run, the fee will be $15.

Late registrants will receive souvenir race shirts if enough remain after pre-registration, parks and recreation staff member Rowenna Marrs said.

The event is slated to begin at 6 p.m. at the starting line on the east edge of the park near Julia Randall Elementary school. The 3.1-mile course winds through the park and continues west along Country Club Drive. Runners and walkers will then make a U-turn and retrace their steps before finishing near the original starting line.

Most of the course which is the same one used for the Habitat for Humanity Home Run last spring is flat, but there are some short hills on the return trip along Country Club.

Entrants will participate in age/gender divisions from 12 and under to 70 and over.

For more information, call Marrs at 474-5242, ext. 7.
