Jones Wins Tourney Title In 18-Hole Playoff


In an 18-hole playoff held Monday at Payson Golf Course, Mary Jones edged Laura Meyocks for the Payson Women's Golf Association President's Cup championship.

The playoff was needed after the two tied for first-place honors in the two-day tournament held Aug. 13 and 14. Both carded identical scores of 142 in the first tournament.

Tennis anyone?

Payson's chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters will host a benefit tennis tournament from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Sept. 15 on the Rumsey Park courts.

The tournament will include men's and women's doubles play in a round-robin format.

Tournament organizations are encouraging players of all abilities to participate. Partnerships will be determined by a committee after all entries are received. More experienced players will be paired with those less experienced.

The entry fee is $20, which includes a barbecue lunch at the courts and tennis balls.

Entry forms, which are available at 404 West Aero in Payson, must be received by Sept. 12.

Senior league

A group of 10 local longtime softball players are attempting to organize Payson's first senior women's slow pitch team.

The inaugural practice will be held at 8 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday) on the Rumsey I playing field. Senior women (50-years-plus) are invited to participate.

Cheer camp

The Payson High School cheerleading and spirit squad will be hosting a cheer camp for all Payson Youth Football Association cheerleaders from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today (Friday) at the stage in Green Valley Park. Girls ages 5-and-older are welcome to attend. All participants should wear shorts, T-shirt and tennis shoes. The fee is $10 per camper.

Punt, Pass & Kick

Get ready to test your skills against your classmates it's time for the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition.

Sponsored by the Payson Parks and Recreation Department, the competition each year allows boys and girls, ages 8 to 15, to show off their gridiron skills in punting, passing and place kicking.

Scores are based on distance and accuracy.

The local competition will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at the multipurpose field. Ages 8 to 11 will begin at 5:30 p.m.; ages 12 to 15 will compete at 6:30 p.m.
