George Lewis Sutherland, 89, of Payson, died Aug 24, 2001 in Payson. He was born May 19, 1912, in Knoxville, Iowa.

Sutherland was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad for over 44 years, first in Los Angeles, and then in 1938, the Reading Room in Seligman, where he met his future wife who was working as a Harvey Girl in the Fred Harvey Havasu.

The family moved to the Reading Room in Winslow in 1949, which moved into La Posada in 1966, from which he retired in 1974. He also was a semi-professional photographer and had many photos published in the Winslow Mail, Arizona Republic, Santa Fe Magazine and Arizona Highways.

Upon retirement, he moved to Payson where he was able to pursue his keen interests in tennis, golf, painting and photography. One of his greatest pleasures in late life was to revisit La Posada in 2000 and see that building well on the way to restoration.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Jo of Payson; and one son, David Sutherland of London, England.

No services are planned.

Donations may be sent to RTA Hospice, 107 E. Frontier St. Payson, AZ. 85541.
