Only two days after picking up their second win of the season, a 46-40 win over Camp Verde, the Longhorn boys basketball team (2-7) fell once again upon hard times, losing 62-47 to Valley Christian.
In the loss to VC, Friday in Wilson Dome, the Horn defense was forced to contend with Christian's 6-foot 7-inch center who entered the game touted as a college prospect.
Although he was a force against the Horns, Payson High's senior guard Ky Bradley said the team came up with a solid defensive effort.
"I think we did a good job on him," Bradley said.
Payson countered VC's center with 6-foot 5-inch sophomore Mike Barr who led the team in scoring with 19 points.
In the victory over Camp Verde, Dec. 18 in Wilson Dome, Barr again paced the team in scoring with 13 points. He also dominated the boards finishing with a team-high 10 rebounds.
Nikki Cassuto turned in a commendable all-around effort with nine points, nine rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal.
Junior forward Waylon Pettet, one of the most athletic members on the team, contributed eight points, three rebounds and one steal.
Alex Cassuto, Nikki's brother, had eight points.
With Payson High School now in recess for the holidays, the team will take a brief respite before returning to action Dec. 28 and 29 in the Camp Verde Invitational Tournament.
The Horns open the tournament at 5 p.m. Dec. 28 against River Valley.
