There will be no visit to Phoenix America West Arena for the Lady Longhorns.
A state tournament opening round 51-33 loss to the Ganado Hornets ended any hopes the team had of advancing to the semifinals played in the home of the Phoenix Suns.
One of the team's goals at the beginning of the season had been to be the first Payson hoop team to play at America West.
In the loss to the Hornets Tuesday morning at Northern Arizona University's Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff the Lady Horns could never muster the offense needed to stay with Ganado.
While Payson was struggling to score, Ganado's outside shooters were raining three-pointers.
With the loss, the Lady Horns' season is at an end. Ganado, however, stays alive in the tournament and will advance to the second round in Flagstaff against Chino Valley.
Ganado entered the tournament as a three-seed from the North.
Payson earned a second seed to the big dance by virtue of a runner-up finish in the East regional tournament Feb. 9 and 10 in Show Low.
All that's left on the agenda for the Lady Horn players is the traditional awards ceremony (date and location to be announced) and the naming of the athletes who were voted to the All-East team.
The star squad will be announced Feb. 24 at the conclusion of the state tournament.
