Your senses are in for a treat Saturday if you've purchased tickets for the Mayor's Cup Chefs competition at the Tonto Apache Community Center. You'll enjoy appetizers and desserts from eight Rim country chefs and their culinary teams as they compete for top honors. And you'll be the judge.
You'll also enjoy wine tasting, live music and an art show presented by the Payson Art League. You may even get lucky and take home some beautiful art by winning one of the many raffle items. It's sure to be an enjoyable evening worth dressing up for.
But while you're sampling the food, wine, music and art, you will also be providing valuable resources for our public library. All proceeds raised by this event go directly to our public library through the Library Friends of Payson.
With your help, the Library Friends have provided funding for new books, computers, software and money for the building fund. Over the years, the Friends have earned our trust by using contributions wisely.
For example, Library Director Terry Morris wanted to help with the school's accelerated reading program which allows children extra credit for reading more advanced books. The program encourages children to read above their current level and helps them discover new frontiers in literature. But many of the books on the school's approved reading list were not available. Terry approached the Library Friends and through fund-raisers such as the chefs competition, the Friends were able to provide $5,000 toward the purchase of approximately 350 new books. Books not just for students, but for all of us to enjoy easy readers like Dr. Seuss to novels by John Grisham.
We would like to thank the restaurants and caterers who are participating in this year's competition: the Black Bear, Cedar Ridge, Creekside Steakhouse, I.T. Catering, Macky's Grill, My Thyme is Yours, The Randall House and the Zane Grey Dining Room at Kohl's Ranch. We also thank The Lutheran Brotherhood and the Aid Association of Lutherans, Alliance Beverage, The Payson Art League, KMOG, Shaker Music, Printing by George, Wal-Mart and Legacy Home Furnishings for supporting this event.
As you may know, the chefs competition has been a sell-out event for the past two years since its inception. There are only 50 tickets left so hurry and purchase yours today by calling 472-9015 or 474-9456. Tickets are $20. A few tickets are also available at the Payson Roundup at 708 N. Beeline Highway.
