Less than a month after high school and middle school wrestling seasons wrapped up, eager athletes are returning to the mat in search of even more competition. Among those who still thirst for the spirit of battle are Zack Lee, Nathan Lee, Andy Sanders and Brandon Chovanec.
The young grapplers traveled to Apache Junction Sept. 17 where they participated in the Tucson-edition of the Grand Canyon Games. Both Lees and Sanders returned home with gold medals, Chovanec copped a silver medal.
Zack Lee, a member of the state runner-up Payson High team, won the Cadet division (15-16 years) 143-pound crown. His younger brother, Nathan, wrestled his way to the 154-pound school boy (13-14) title. Sanders, a seventh-grade student at Rim Country Middle School, captured the 120-pound youth (11-12-years) championship. Chovanec's silver came in the 80-pound school boy division.
With the win, both Lees and Sanders earned the right to defend their crowns in the Phoenix edition of the Grand Canyon Games June 1, 2 and 3 in Payson.
