The Rim Country Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team is off to a lightning quick start that's the envy of most every White Mountain League school.
The Lady Mavericks' sterling record improved to 6-0 following last week's clean sweep of Show Low (45-31), Snowflake (27-23) and Blue Ridge Lakeside (46-17).
It's not often that a middle school squad or a high school team for that matter manages to thump the Cougars, Lobos and Yellow Jackets all in the course of five days.
The trio of triumphs tipped off Feb. 20 in RCMS gym with the three-point win over the Lobos.
After falling behind 11-10 at halftime, the determined Lady Mavs outscored Snowflake 10-4 in the crucial third quarter.
Throughout the fourth stanza, RCMS continually thwarted several Snowflake comeback attempts.
The Lady Mavs, however, almost proved to be their own worst enemy by misfiring on six of nine free throws in the quarter.
By tallying six points each, Tanya Davis and Haylee Huff spearheaded the Mav attack. Rebecca East finished with five. Autumn Herrera, Cassandra Cly and Shelby Bennett contributed two each.
One day after the stirring victory over the Lobos, the Mavs traveled to Show Low Junior High where the team rolled to the 14-point victory.
This time around, it was Herrera who had the hot shooting, hand finishing with a game high 16 points. Davis cashed in with six and Brittany Owens had four.
Amanda Korth, Morgan O'Haver, Rikki Ray, Cly and Bennett had two each.
The Mavericks hardwood rampage continued Friday in Lakeside with the mauling of Blue Ridge. Scoring honors in the victory were garnered by Herrera (8), Huff (6), Cly (6) and Davis (6).
Coach Louis Crabtree, who uses a five-in-five-out philosophy, said his team is well rounded enough to use most of his entire roster.
"We don't lose a step no matter who is in there," he said. "Teamwork is a big thing."
The Mavericks, who are steaming toward a possible WML championship, will attempt to keep their slate unblemished today (Tuesday) in RCMS gym against the Whiteriver Roughriders. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
