Realtor's Garage, Two Vehicles Scorched In Late-Night Blaze

Payson's new year started not with a bang, but with a fire resulting in the loss of a garage and all its contents, including two vehicles.

At 11:21 p.m. Monday, the Payson Fire Department received a report of a structure fire in the 400 block of Deer Trail, the home of Dorothy and Jim Young, owner of ERA Young Realty in Payson.

Upon their arrival, firefighters found the home's garage "fully involved," Payson Fire Marshal Jack Babb said, "with smoke coming out of the eaves around the house."

The Youngs had been awakened by smoke detectors, Babb said.

"They found fire in the garage and were able to get out of the house with the help of Payson Police Department officers" who had arrived at the scene almost immediately.

Jim Young was taken to the hospital for treatment of possible smoke inhalation, Babb said.

"There is some smoke damage in the house, but it is minimal," he said. "The fire was contained to the garage, and the contents of the garage were destroyed."

Those contents included two vehicles a small sedan and a sports utility vehicle a refrigerator, a freezer, a four-drawer file cabinet and "additional boxes of possible paper storage," Babb said.

The fire marshal could not estimate how long it took firefighters to douse the blaze, and said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
