From courtesy clerk to store manager, Dave Lyons has spent 28 years moving up the ladder of the Safeway corporation.
This week, his crew at the Payson Safeway say good-bye to their leader of 16 years as he heads to his new store in Fountain Hills. "Dave has done a great job in our store in Payson," Debra Albery, Safeway public afffairs director, said. "When a manager needs a move, and he's done a good job, we try to accomodate them. We're confident he'll do a good job in our Fountain Hills store."
Nearly three decades ago, Lyons began his grocery career as a courtesy clerk at the Safeway store at Granite Reef and Indian School in Scottsdale. "That corner is now a Rural Metro fire station," he said.
From his humble beginnings, he's worked his way from bagger to night crew stocker, second assistant manager to first assistant manager.
In 1985, he was named manager of his Payson store.
With this transfer, Lyons will take over the reins of the largest Safeway store in Arizona at the corner of Palisades and Fountain Hills Boulevard.
"The store is going to be remodeled next month, and will be 62,000 square feet when they're done," he said.
It's been a long road for Lyons, who has commuted for 16 years from his home in Fountain Hills where his wife and two daughters live, to his home in Payson. After burning up the Beeline for all those years, Lyons said his transfer comes at an opportune time: his wife Angela is expecting their third child next month.
"It's going to be nice, not having to commute, to be close to my family," he said. "But I'll always have a place in Payson.
"I don't like to look at it like I'm leaving Payson. I have roots here. I have a house here. I love the community and I love the people," he said. "I'll always come back to Payson."
