P-S clubs call for new members

If you need something to do, want to meet some new friends or you just want to get involved in the community, there's plenty of activities in Pine and Strawberry. All of these groups and organizations are actively looking for new members.

Daily events

Senior center

You can get a great hot lunch and visit with friends in the senior center dining room every weekday at noon. The senior center offers memberships to residents 50 years and older for just $5 per year. Members get a hot lunch for $3.50 and nonmembers that's everybody else can get a great meal for just $4 a plate. For daily menus and to make a reservation, call 476-2151.

Weekly events

Canasta

A nonsmoking bunch of women gather every Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the senior center dining room to play canasta. Call Willene Smith for information at 476-3587.

TOPS

Take Off Pounds Sensibly meets at 8 a.m. every Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pine. For details, call Shirley Conklin at 476-3024.

Kiwanis

The Rim Country Kiwanis meets every Tuesday at noon for a lunch meeting in the Kiwanis building, in the back of the Community Center.

Bingo

Our local Kiwanis also sponsors a weekly game of bingo. Every Saturday night at 6 p.m. Kiwanis members call out the numbers in the Kiwanis building at the Community Center. Everyone is welcome and invited to bring a guest. Money raised goes right back into the community.

Bi-monthly events

Strawberry Patchers

Quilters gather the first and third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. in the Arts-n-Crafts room at the Community Center. Members make quilts for themselves as well as project quilt such as those donated to law enforcement officers for use with children involved in traumatic incidents. Computer club

A computer club meets at 6:30 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month in the senior dining room at the Pine Community Center to discuss, learn and ask questions about the Internet and computers.

Pine-Strawberry Arts-n-Crafts Guild

Each year, the P-S Arts-n-Crafts Guild hosts three huge craft fairs at the Community Center. They hold a general meeting the last Friday of each month at 9 a.m. in the Arts-n-Crafts room at the Community Center. For more information, call Jan Beal at 476-2508 or Sue Montgomery at 476-4647.

P-S Pantry

The Pine-Strawberry Food Bank meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Community Center. Interested folks can call Sharon Balentine at 476-2503 for more information.

Pine-Strawberry Archeological and Historical Society

The P-S Historical Society meets the third Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. in the P-S Museum at the Community Center and the public is invited. This group has kept the museum open and active and is directly responsible for all the activities at the old Strawberry Schoolhouse. Isabelle Hunt Memorial Library

The Isabelle Hunt Memorial Library Board of Trustees meets at 9 a.m. on the third Tuesday of each month in the Pine Museum at the Community Center. For information, call Melvin Vorst at 476-4791.

The Friends of the Library meet the fourth Monday of each month at 1 p.m. in the Kiwanis Building at the Community Center. This group supports the library with fund-raisers and volunteers. For details, call 476-3678.

For those who can't make it to the library, Books on Wheels can bring them to you. Books can be delivered and picked up for those with physical handicaps or special needs. Call 476-3678 for more information.

Pine-Strawberry Medical Center

P-S Medical Center board meets the third Monday of every month at the medical center on Hardscrabble Road. The board runs the community-owned clinic and sets up the fund-raiser that have generated the dollars needed to keep the clinic stocked with first-rate medical equipment. Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce

The Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce holds monthly mixers at different businesses. The P-S office, located inside the Pine Museum at the Community Center, is open every business day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the winter and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m in the summer. PSIA

The Pine-Strawberry Improvement Association meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the P-S School conference room. Call Barbara Johnson at 476-4300 for more information.

Tonto Rim Search and Rescue

The Tonto Rim Search and Rescue Squad meets the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at Manzanita Manor in Payson. All-night searches, rope rescues, cave searches and water rescues are what they call fun. For more information, call commander Mike Taylor at 476-4947.

Emergency Task Force

The Pine-Strawberry Emergency Task Force meets the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the meeting room at the Fire Station on Hardscrabble Road in Pine. This is also the group responsible for the funding and installation of the Community Alert Siren System.

CERCA

The Community Educational Recreational Cultural Association meets the second Monday of every month at 3 p.m. in the senior dining room. The group oversees the activities at the Community Center, including the Cultural Hall, Museum, Thrift Store and Senior Center. Call Melvin Can Vorst at 476-4791 for more information.

Elected governing bodies

There are 17 positions on three governing boards held by people elected by the general population to serve four-year terms. These three boards oversee the policies and budgets of the fire department, the school and the water district. Agendas are typically posted in advance at the post office and the community center.

Pine-Strawberry Fire Department

The Pine-Strawberry Fire Department governing board meets the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the station on Hardscrabble Road. Five board members elected by the residents of Pine-Strawberry meet in an open public meeting.

P-S Elementary School

The five-member governing board of the Pine-Strawberry School meets the second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the school's conference room.

Pine-Strawberry Water Improvement District

The Pine-Strawberry Water Improvement District is made up of seven elected officials. Its governing board meets the second Saturday of the month at 1 p.m. in the meeting room in the Kiwanis Meeting Hall at the Community Center in Pine.
