The Payson Futbol Club will be sponsoring an 35-years-and-over Independence Day Soccer Tournament July 4 and 6 through 9 on the Rumsey Park multipurpose field.
At press time, four Valley teams are scheduled to join the Payson team in a round robin tournament format.
Admission is free and spectators are welcome.
Also on the holiday agenda is a coed softball tournament to be contested tomorrow (Wednesday) on the Rumsey II field. Tournament Director Teddy Pettet anticipates five or six teams will participate.
A pair of Rim country teams have entered including Michelle Gay's Turn Two squad and the 12-pack team of Sandee Koon.
Tournament format will be a round robin shoot out in the early morning and a single elimination tournament in the afternoon. Play begins at 9 a.m.
The Rim country has been well represented at Arizona Sports Camp sessions held throughout the summer at Yavapai College in Prescott.
At an early June session, former Rim Country Middle School eighth-grade standout Andy Sergeant attended.
Only last week, the camp drew locals Hunter Hardt, Miles Huff and Levi Neal.
By sinking 35 of 40 free throws, Hardt earned the camp's middle school free-throw championship.
Got your physical?
With the new school year and the beginning of the fall sports seasons just around the corner, prospective athletes at both Payson High and Rim Country Middle Schools should have their annual physical exams completed and on file in school offices.
Those who didn't take advantage of the school-wide examinations given last spring must schedule one with their family doctors as soon as possible.
Practice sessions at both schools begin Aug. 6 and those who don't have their physical exams and other paperwork on file will not be allowed to participate.
The best advice to all athletes is to take care of the preliminaries and avoid the headaches.
Northern Arizona University's women's soccer coach Andre Luciano will be in the Rim country this week to oversee a girls soccer camp.
The camp, July 6 and 7, is open to girls entering grades seven through 12.
The July 6 session is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the Rumsey Park multipurpose field. The July 7 session is from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., also at Rumsey Park.
The registration fee is $33 per person.
Registration may be competed at Parks and Recreation at Green Valley Park. Call 474-5242, ext. 7 for more information.
