A foursome of Rim country wrestlers are set to participate in the Amateur Athletic Junior Grand National Championships July 5 through July 7 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Entered are George Coleman, Zack Lee, Larry Wilbanks and Nathan Lee.
Coleman, who will be a junior at Payson High School next school year, advances to the AAU games as a fifth-place finisher in 189-pound division of the 2001 Class 3A state championships.
Zack Lee finished second in the 135-pound division at state.
Despite battling a shoulder injury, Wilbanks a freshman last year finished 6th at state.
As a 150-pound member of the Rim Country Middle School wrestling team, Nathan Lee won a White Mountain League championship.
On the road again
In other summer mat action, Coleman and Zack Lee traveled to the USA Wrestling National Cadet (15-16 years) Duals championships June 8 to 9 in Inglewood, Colo.
As members of the Arizona All-Star team, Lee (143 pounds) finished with a 4-1 mark.
Competing in the 209-pound class, Coleman put together a 3-2 mark.
Although both Payson wrestlers posted winning records, the Arizona All-Star team did not make the finals, PHS wrestling coach Dave LaMotte said.
Only days after the Cadet championships wrapped up, the two traveled to Pocatello, Idaho for the USA Western Regional championships.
Entered in the prestigious games were some of the best wrestlers from California, Utah, Oregon, Nevada and other Western states.
In the freestyle division, Coleman and Zack Lee finished with 1-2 records.
Joining the two in the tournament was Nathan Lee who participated in the School Boy (13-14 years) division. In the freestyle events, Nathan Lee finished third with a 5-1 record.
According to LaMotte, a one-point loss in the semifinals kept Nathan Lee out of the championship round. In the Greco-Roman event, he was a runner-up with a 4-2 mark.
