As host of the Rim country 35-years-and-older men's soccer tournament, the Payson Futbol Club was looking to stamp itself the equal of the four Valley teams also participating. Unfortunately, the Payson squad (0-5) was not able to muster a win during the three-day affair contested July 6 through 8 on the Rumsey Park multipurpose field.
The Payson squad did turn in a gritty effort Sunday afternoon in a narrow 5-3 loss to Mirage.
"That was probably our best game," Payson Futbol Club member Lee Woods said.
The Glendale Incinerators captured the tournament championship by virtue of its 4-1 record. Samba played its way to a 3-1 record and runner-up honors. The Longbows, a team comprised of Boeing Aircraft employees, and Mirage both wrapped up tournament play with 2-2 marks.
Although Payson was winless, the team is set to return to Rumsey Park on Labor Day to host another men's tournament. According to Woods, the same four teams that participated in the last tournament will probably return for Labor Day.
