By virtue of top-three finishes at the Arizona State Junior Olympic finals three weeks ago, eight members of the Tonto Apache Track and Field team have qualified for the Junior Olympic Region 10 championships. That meet is slated for this weekend on the campus of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
If the Tonto Apache team members can earn top-three finishes there, they would earn the right to advance to the Junior Olympic National Championships the following week in Sacramento.
A pair of athletes Josh Quotskuyva and Kaylee Talgo pace the Tonto Apache team into the Region 10 showdown. Both have qualified in three throws events.
Competing in the Intermediate Boys age division, Quotskuyva who will be a freshman at Payson High School this fall is entered in the shot-put, discus and javelin. Talgo a seventh-grader this fall has qualified in the same three events in the Youth Girls division. Justin Johnson (Midget Boys) and Kindell Begay (Youth Girls) advance to Region 10 as qualifiers in both the shot-put and discus.
Other Tonto Apache entrants include Valentino Doka (Bantam Boys, shot-put); Miguel Lopez (Midget Boys, discus); Mirle Weisser (Intermediate Boys, high jump) and Anthony Johnson (Intermediate Boys, javelin).
