Oran Richard Shear, 71, of Payson, died July 18, 2001, in Payson. He was born Dec. 13, 1929, in Gloverville, N.Y.
Mr. Shear was employed for 32 years in law enforcement.
He was with the Gila County Sheriff's Department for more than 20 years, and most recently was a lieutenant, Payson office area commander. He also served seven years as a New York State Trooper.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Shear of Payson; eight daughters, Bonnie Befort of Phoenix, Linda Tinonga of Phoenix, Christine Byars of Mesa, Donna Tornquist of Phoenix, Patricia Kaufman of Durango, Colo., Becky Moreno of Phoenix, Missy Sikora of Phoenix and Ellen Duran of Payson; one stepdaughter, Kay Price of Bridgeport, Ala.; stepson, Jack Pigg of Star Valley; two nieces, Barb Graham of Kingman, Ariz. and Lisa Matzke of Henderson, Nev.; one nephew, Larry Vaughn of Bullhead City, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his eight daughters, Pauline Shear, and one sister, Beverly Capper.
Private services will be held graveside at Payson Pioneer Cemetery.
A memorial potluck will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, July 23 at Rumsey Park, Ramada No. 5.
