Stephen Gheen Hale, 80, of Mesa, formerly of Pine/Strawberry died July 16, 2001, in Mesa. He was born Oct. 28, 1920, to George A. Hale and Stella May Gheen.
He spent his youth working on his father's ranch in Star Valley, Wyo. and went on to the University of Wyoming with a wrestling scholarship and placed second in the National Collegiate Wrestling finals.
Next he was called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Spanish American Mission.
He moved to Mesa where he married Ethel Mae Millett, daughter of Howard and Lilllian (Freestone) Millett, Aug. 25, 1944 in the Arizona Temple.
Shortly after his wedding, he completed his commitment to the U.S. Navy and returned to Mesa and established the Steve Hale Brokerage.
Later, Mr. Hale directed his business efforts to real estate development throughout the state.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ethel Hale of Mesa; four sons, Stephen R. and his wife Melodee, David S. and his wife Christine, Thomas L. and his wife Nola, J. Nathan and his wife Kathleen; two daughters, Nancy J. and her husband J. Scott Harrington and Delia A. and her husband John K. Alston; three sisters, Ellen Frome, Alta Roundy and Wyoma Rowe; two brothers, Lu and Thiel; 41 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Aaron and George.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mesa Ninth Ward, with interment at Mesa City Cemetery.
Arrangements were handled by Bunker's Garden Chapel.
