Winning Trio Sees 'Red'

Playing a tournament format of "Red Squares" Tuesday, the trio of Shirley Smith, Blanch Nyberg and Judy Neal captured first place in Payson Women's Golf Association action.

In the unique format, tournament director Dee Orr chose at random the holes to be scored.

The winning team finished with a 71 to outdistance the second-place squad of Joyce Karnes, Nancy Althoff and Orr, who compiled a 73.

For Althoff, a former Payson High School teacher and counselor, the tournament represented a stellar outing. In addition to playing her way to runner-up honors, Althoff pocketed closest-to-the-pin prize money on hole No. 14 by swatting to within 19 feet, 17 inches of the flag.

Laura Meyocks took honors on No. 8 by finishing 28 feet 7 inches away.

PWGA is always looking for new members to join their group. Tournaments are played at 8:30 a.m. each Tuesday.
